Icefall!

Some of the prettiest times in the mountains occur when an overnight ice fog coats the trees in an intricate frost that vanishes as soon as the sun hits. Last night was especially unusual, because the fog was accompanied by an actual ice fall that left the ground coated with what looked like white Dippin' Dots (sleet? oobleck?). I raced out at 6:30 a.m. to get some pictures before the magic was gone.

gorgeous. it's so warm here I'm worried that the apple trees won't get the freeze they need.

Gorgeous! It really is the most beautiful when everything is flocked and glistening just before it melts away.

Wow....you have a hydrant?! Now thats civilization for you.

Jess, we've gotten a lot of 75-degree November days, but it's like the stock market - temperatures will go up and down 30 degrees at a time. Wild fluctuations.

Sharon, the hydrant you saw was at the end of the street. I actually have a hydrant in the vacant lot I own right next to my house. But the water company is collectively-owned and kinda sloppy around the edges, so it's hard to say if real water would ever come out in the event of an emergency.

Fantastical!! How long did the "oobleck" last?

When I left Oregon for home after a semester in 1976, my friend drove me down the mountain to the airport in Ashland, and it looked like this, but the fog was still all around. It was pure magic. And the Medford airport had a little plane flying around dropping dry ice to make it snow so planes could see to take off!

Wonderful photos, Loring!

Those were my favorite days in Colorado Springs also, luckily with the weather there you get a good number of them.

Thanks Ruth and John. Ruth, I went into town at 8 and was surprised to see the ice crystals all the way into downtown - they usually are only at the higher altitudes. But by the time I came back at 9, they were all gone, even in my neighborhood.

Those are magical times, Loring. Captured beautifully in your photos.

We are just getting into the snows of winter here in Southern Ontario. A little early for my taste.

Thanks Barry and Denise. I'm twelve levels from Ruth's league, but I try.
