Taking "Me" Out of the Equation

Environmental and journalism gadfly Bill McKibben did a great piece in the Nov./Dec. Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, describing how the cult of self is a big barrier to solving problems like global warming. An important read.

Loring, thanks for bringing the McKibben piece to our attention! That's a winner.
There won't be any sacrifice anytime soon in this country unless it's forced upon us. I've had long conversations with supposedly liberal-minded friends about pollution or global warming. "Why don't you take public transportation or ride your bike to work a few times a week?" I'll ask.
"Are you kidding me?" comes the usual reply.
Much of the solution to our problems, as McKibben points out, lies within ourselves (and, hint, by the way it has little to do with buying a plug-in electric vehicle): turn the lights out when you leave a room, turn your heat down or go without it if it's not freezing outside (ever hear of a sweater?); walk your ass to the grocery store with a couple of re-usable bags (you won't buy stuff you don't need because you'd have to schlep the extra stuff home); turn off the tube and read a book/walk/talk to someone. Play an instrument that doesn't require an amplifier (the sound is always more beautiful) -- most don't.
I dunno. Seems like a simple answer to me.

Loring, couldn't find the article. Do you have a more specific URL?
