From Improv to Ragtime - Jack Rose, 1971-2009

Jack Rose, the experimental guitarist who was "considered instrumental in bringing ragtime to the modern era," died early Dec. 5 of an apparent heart attack. He was 38.

I discovered Jack through the amazing Virginia band Pelt, who melded elements of noise, bluegrass, raga, and South American music into something uniquely their own. My Virginia friend Deral Fenderson played with Jack and other Pelt members, as well as with side projects such as Black Twig Pickers. Delta Blues guitarist Charlie Parr, who came to Colorado Springs this past summer, was supposed to record an album with Jack at Klang Industries right around now. While only well-known among musicians, Jack will be known in years to come by anyone studying guitar or early 20th-century music styles.
